Week 12

Well, would you believe it when I say that a quarter of my Rotary District Governor year has gone already, it’s unbelievable how quickly that time has passed.

Before I start my ramblings, I must say how proud yesterday’s state funeral of the late Queen Elizabeth made me feel. Every person from our excellent Military Service, Emergency Services, including St John Ambulance and the wonderful scouts and all volunteers who collected food which was donated to the Felix project for homeless in London and families in need was amazing. It was just brilliant and so fitting for the Service she had given to our country. I read later a tweet from Prince William that 5.1 billion people had watched the funeral on social media, 62% of the world, that just showed how much we all loved and respected her.

May she now rest in peace and God Save the King.

On Tuesday last week I was invited by President Geoff Knipe of Lancaster Loyne Rotary Club to give a vote of thanks to a guest speaker John Nanni who was joining them, via Zoom, to talk about his life as a Polio Survivor.

John was an amazing speaker; one I would highly recommend. He was an inspirational speaker and talked about his life growing up, the challenges he faced and how he set about overcoming those challenges. He also explained how the events he’d experienced made him in to the person he is today.

His talk certainly got people thinking; John drew comparisons between the Polio Pandemic and the recent Covid Pandemic we’ve all recently experienced. It is amazing just how similar these two events were and just how quickly these two diseases spread and the devastating effects they had.

This talk reinforced my reasons for choosing Polio as my charity this year. We as Rotarians started our mission to rid the World of Polio and we quickly need to bring our mission to its end.

My plea to Clubs would be to join me in donating as much as your Clubs could afford this year and let us as District 1190 Cumbria and Lancashire be part of the team to finally beat Polio.

John Nanni was happy for me to share his contact details, and if any club does book a Zoom talk with him, I would love to listen to it again. Email jntenor@yahoo.com

I would like to thank President Geoff and the Rotarians of Lancaster Loyne for inviting me to the meeting, it’s the best speaker I have heard in a long time.

It was on Thursday last week that I was notified from a Past District Governor about the clubs that where awarded a Presidential Citation for the year 21/22. 11 clubs in this District received this award and I just wanted to mention and say thank you to each one of you in going the extra mile in completing the work and more importantly imputing this information, including projects, hours worked etc, this made me proud of everything we do in this District. A special mention goes to the following clubs: Accrington, Burnley, Church and Oswaldtwistle, Clitheroe, Cockermouth, Darwen, Furness Peninsula, Furness, Lancaster Loyne, Upper Eden, and Whitehaven Castle.

To all other clubs you are probably already completing the work required, so why not start inputting the information into RCC. If you need any assistance please let me, or one of the district team know

I spent Thursday at my own Club, and we had a talk from a new member Ron Nelson, who was a designer who worked with a Team at Barrow Shipyard designing and building submarines. His was also an interesting talk and another excellent speaker I would recommend for any Club.

You may remember me telling you a while ago about being given a large amount of children’s clothing. Well, we have now arranged an event on the 8th October 2022 in a Village Hall at Cragbank, Carnforth where we hope to sell as much of the clothing as we can. Several other stall holders have also been invited, selling arts and craft gifts and cakes. The stall holders have paid a donation to attend the event which will help to bolster the overall profits.

If anybody is interested, I have put the link for the poster here.

Monies raised will be split equally three ways to Polio, Ukraine and for energy vouchers. These donations will be going from District, not one club.

I would also like to remind everyone of the District Conference 2023, the links are available for you to book now.

That’s all for now folks, TTFN
