Dear friends and colleagues, where has time gone? I feel that this year, as your DG, has flown by and I’m now in the last few months. My recent visits around the District have included a lovely evening spent in the company of Rotarians from Garstang Rotary Club. I can’t thank the membership enough for the evening and the warm welcome I received. All members updated me on the projects they were involved with. How many hours do this Club commit to Rotary? It is phenomenal, and all delivered with such enthusiasm from everyone involved. Garstang Rotary Club is without doubt a warm and friendly Club and I was honoured to be part of their evening. I am so proud of all the work taking place . Thank you, President Roger. A really enjoyable event I attended recently was the District 1190 Young Chef competition. It was incredible to witness such talent and professionalism in these eight young people. I was truly amazed by the end results. They all produced very professional three course

Weeks 25 - 34 Into the New Year

On the 12th January I had the great pleasure of attending a lunch time meeting with the Rotary club of Keswick which included a number of Bassenthwaite members. We had a lovely lunch at The Skiddaw hotel what a nice place to have a meeting . The amount of working both these clubs are involved in including warm places , community meetings and food collections is amazing The friendship and fellowship between the clubs is heartwarming and it was lovely to meet many members and share our thoughts. I attended Leyland Rotary Charter night , my home town . It was lovely to be able to spend the evening with them and listen to the beautiful voice of Rachel Mercer, a great friend of my home club Carnforth. The evening was so relaxing and they had a great atmosphere. I felt as though I was back home for a night. I’ve  got to share with you my next event. A morning Mental Health Conference organised by Cockermouth Club . The whole event was well organised , had some inspirational speakers, pe

Belated Happy New Year to all my fellow Rotarians, Families and Friends. Here's to a great 2nd half of our DG journey!   As 2022 has drawn to a close, there is a tendency to spend our time looking back – certainly, there was a lot to look back on in the year gone by.   We lost our dear Queen Elizabeth II. We saw the rise of conflict in mainland Europe. We saw three Prime Ministers. We lost many great and loved figures.   There are many things, both good and bad, to look back at… But the New Year is a time to look forward, to imagine how we can make the world a safer and better place; we need to have a ‘Why Not?’ attitude and look forward to all that we can achieve in 2023 and then do it!   In the new spirit of Rotary and the fresh ways we can release ourselves, we can be so much more to so many more people. We can talk confidently to new generations, to potential new members safe in the knowledge that we can find a Rotary model that suits them and their lifestyles.   We

Weeks 22 - 23 Wishing you A Merry Christmas

Hello everybody and apologies for not updating this site for a couple of weeks, here’s a two-week update from a very busy Rotarian and District Governor. You will be glad to hear the sale of the children’s clothing which were donated to us by a wonderful lady, Sally, has now finished. Sunday 4 December saw me together with Linda Lambson, set up the last of our clothes sales. It has been a hard slog but one we have enjoyed doing together and worthwhile for our nominated causes. As a result of the sales, we have raised enough funds for £1000 to go through District to support Ukraine; £1000 to my charity this year - Polio; and the rest going towards a pot of money for any Club to be able to give a small donation of food or energy vouchers. This will be a one-off pot of funding and it is expected to pay out around £50 per each application. This may not sound a lot but to some families this would pay for a good Christmas lunch. On Wednesday 23 rd November I was fortunate enough to

Week 21 Countdown to Christmas

It’s hard to believe yet another week has gone speeding past and bringing us ever closer to Christmas. Santa Claus will be here in just under 5 weeks .    I hope you all getting ready for your Christmas Sleigh evening , or days at Supermarkets and Town Centres doing your Christmas collections . This year I’ve asked Family and friends not to send or post Christmas Cards. The cost of the cards and postage, like everything else, just seems to increase year on year, and those increases do make a difference. The price of a card and postage could pay for another child to receive the inoculation against Polio, now that would make a difference. Please think about donating to Polio.  This week I attended a couple of meetings with youth organisations and the highlight of this week was a very pleasant evening spent in the company of President Tony and the lovely Rotarians, friends, and family of  The Rotary Club of Barrow in Furness.  We had a lovely meal, listened to a fantastic speake

Week 20

Well, here we are week 20! How the heck did we get here so fast? Not that long to go now until many Rotary Clubs reach their busy period organising Christmas Sleigh collections and, best of all, Festive parties. In my year I can honestly say this has been the most challenging week, and not one I want to go through again, but its been a learning curve and I will take the learning with me going forward. This week I attended the 70th Charter of Longridge Rotary Club, held at Barton Manor and what an excellent night it was. 120 people attended, with several of these being friends of Rotary and Corporate Invites. Tom Finney’s son was a guest of Peter Mason, and it was great to see him.  I must say the guests certainly brought the average age of Rotary down and it was brilliant to have large tables of young men and women on the guest list.   President Graham Robinson certainly gave us a good night out with his speaker Eddie The Eagle who spoke passionately about his life and

Hello everybody, firstly I’d like to offer my sincere apologies for not updating this site for a couple of weeks, today’s blog will be a bumper edition.  I think it may be worth you grabbing a coffee, or a nice cup of tea, together with a mince pie and relaxing while you read. I’ve attended numerous events over the last few weeks , all Rotary related, but first an update on my nominated Charity for the year - Polio. I am currently preparing another order for the Purple4Polio Quality Street tins, so if anybody would like to order one and give it as a present with a leaflet about polio, I will ensure that you receive both before Christmas.  The tins would make a lovely gift, and although a little expensive, the story behind them and the profit we make for the fight against this awful illness does make them worthwhile. We need to continue with our cause and the promise Rotary made to help eradicate Polio in the world.  I know of a number of Rotarians who have decided not to send
